Make Good provides tangible, on-the-ground impact to Los Angeles’ most vulnerable and underserved youth. We do this through our two signature programs: The Book Foundation and The TAY Shop.

The Book Foundation takes an all-inclusive approach to literacy that includes word, financial, nutritional literacy and social and emotional intelligence in order to close the achievement gap. We place new books into the hands and homes of thousands of underserved children and families. Through events, programs and partnerships we engage children of all ages to help improve their academic outcomes and to build brighter futures.

Since 2014, The Book Foundation has donated thousands of new and gently used books and backpacks through a variety of events and programs.

In addition to our book and backpack giveaways, we create Book Nooks in schools and locations where there is a high concentration of the most underserved children and youth where access to books is desperately needed.

The TAY Shop

The TAY shop is a retail environment where transitional aged foster youth (18-24 years old) are able to shop for casual and career clothing and basic essentials free of charge.

Building on the success of Foster Care Counts’ Goods for Grades program and with the support of the Pritzker Foster Care Initiative, The TAY Shop at The Emporium: Foster Resource & Literacy Center is a retail environment where transition aged foster youth (~18-24 years old) are able to shop for casual & career clothing and basic essentials free of charge. These young people are referred to us by educational, mentoring or job training programs.  Being able to leave our space with new clothing that they can use for new jobs, internships and school is often life-changing for the young people who visit our space.

In conjunction with the shopping experience, we are providing workshops and forums to stakeholders and youth that are focused on areas of interest that are truly impactful.

The Book Foundation & The TAY Shop are located at The Emporium: Foster Resource & Literacy Center in Mid-city Los Angeles.  The Emporium houses a group of mission-aligned non-profits that share resources to increase positive outcomes for foster and vulnerable children and youth.  It is a collaborative effort of Foster Care Counts, The Book Foundation, and Hope in a Suitcase and is made possible by the generous support of The Pritzker Foster Care Initiative.  The Emporium Shops are an appointment- only storefront that offers tweens, transition aged foster youth and young adults basic essentials, career and casual clothing, accessories and books free of charge.
